This little girl carrying the water jugs is from the Mathare Valley in Kenya. She will walk a distance of 1 kilometer or so carrying 40 pounds of water that she has taken from a polluted stream loaded with fecal matter. This area is considered an urban area with 500,000 people. The problem here is that this chld lives in the most incredible extreme poverty in an area that has about a 40% HIV/AIDS rate and many of the children are orphans. She is probably responsible for getting water for her family and several neighbours and may not even attend school because of lack of funds.
This painting was bought by Trojan Technologies and hangs in their corporate office in London Ontario.
